Ports
A port is a venous access system in the form of a reservoir made of titanium, plastic or ceramic. The capacity of the chamber is about 0.5 ml. A port is intended to ensure access to the bloodstream without permanent puncture of the vein. It is basically implanted under the skin and the connection to the vein is established by means of a plastic catheter (silicone or polyurethane).
The port, respectively the port chamber has a self-locking silicone membrane. This membrane, called septum, is the access path to the port system. With special port cannulas, the reservoir (port chamber) is punctuated through the membrane, so that the drug or the infusion fluid can then enter the body through the catheter connected to it.

Port cannula with infusion line
A port cannula is a rectangular curved needle that is hollow inside. It has an approximately 10 cm long infusion line. Port cannulas are used in connection with ports and they are non-reusable disposable products, i.e. they are disposed of after single use. In contrast to the conventional cannulas used, e.g. for blood removal, the port cannulas at their tip have a special cut that does not damage the septum of the port when piercing in. Therefore, it is also referred to as “non-coring needles”. Normally, these port cannulas have small wings on both sides (therefore these cannulas are sometimes called butterfly cannulas), with which the attachment to the skin is carried out. As described above, the port is under the skin, i.e. it is not visible, but must be felt by the doctor or nurse.
Since ports are implanted near the surface, this palpation is relatively easy for healthcare professionals. The port cannula must be pierced through the skin, tissue and septum to ensure that the drug can enter the port chamber and from there continue through the catheter into the patient’s vein.
